The Cumbres and Toltec Route
-- In southern Colorado

In southern Colorado, there is a narrow guage railroad that is open during the summer. If you like trains, you will love the trip on this railroad. Its a day long trip, and costs about $45 per person. After riding the railroad, the next day you will want to follow the roads in your MR2. You will go over the highest point at 10,015 feet above sea level!

The drive (and the train) ends in Chama, New Mexico. There is a lot of western entertainment here in the summer because the train draws so many visitors. If you are going to ride the train, make sure you call ahead at least by a day or two and make reservations!

The drive itself is a simple one hour drive on Rt. 17 in southern Colorado. However, if you do it, I suggest that you try to time it so you can stop on the side of the road to watch the steam engine cross in many places. Its exciting to be on the train, and to watch it going by. For more fun, be at the high point where the train stops to fill up with water. Also, there is a some good evening entertainment in the Chama area.
